Accounting Professors’ Manuscript Chosen Among Outstanding Articles of Year

The published work of four University of Scranton accounting professors was selected as one of the “outstanding articles of the year” by the Institute of Management Accountants. The manuscript “Operation Broken Gate: The SEC Holding Gatekeepers Accountable” by Scranton professors Douglas M. Boyle, D.B.A., James Boyle, A.B.D., Brian Carpenter, Ph.D., and Daniel Mahoney, Ph.D., received the Institute of Management Accountants’ Lybrand Silver Medal at the Institute of Management Accountants annual award dinner in June.

The article, published in the January 2015 issue of Strategic Finance, was the second-highest-ranking manuscript in the Lybrand Competition, which included all manuscripts published during the year in the IMA’s Strategic Finance and Management Accounting Quarterly journals, both of which are rated within the top five practitioner journals.

This is the second consecutive year that a manuscript authored by three of the professors received a Lybrand Medal. Last year, the article “New Rules for Lessee Accounting: A Summary of the Lessee Provisions of Accounting Standards Update” by Dr. Douglas Boyle, Dr. Carpenter and Dr. Mahoney received the Lybrand Bronze Medal. In 2013, these three professors were also honored for their manuscript “Goodwill Accounting: A Closer Examination of the Matter of Nonimpairments.” That award was for outstanding character and excellence in contributing to literature for the advancement of management accounting and financial management.

     Dr. Douglas Boyle, D.B.A., holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of Scranton, a MBA from Columbia University and a doctorate from Kennesaw State University. A Certified Public Accountant as well as a Certified Management Accountant, he has more than 25 years of industry executive experience. He twice earned the Kania School of Management Teacher of the Year award and earned the Provost Excellence Awards for the Scholarship of Teaching in 2014 and for Scholarly Publication in 2012.

He currently serves as chair of the Accounting Department at the University. He has served on the boards of directors for public and private companies and serves on the Finance Committee and as board chairman for the Allied Services Skilled Nursing Division.

   Professor James Boyle, A.B.D., holds a bachelor’s and MBA from The University of Scranton. He currently holds ABD (all but dissertation) status in a DBA program at Kennesaw State University. He has taught undergraduate and MBA classes in accounting part-time at the University since 2009 and full-time since 2012. He also served as an internal auditor for the University from 1999 to 2012. Prior to joining the University, he worked in public accounting as a CPA primarily in the audit department for 14 years.

Professor Boyle has published articles in multiple academic journals, including The CPA Journal, Strategic Finance, The Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting and Internal Auditing. He was awarded a competitive research grant from the Institute of Management Accountants for his dissertation study “The Effects of Risk Management Programs on Financial Professionals’ Judgments.”

   Dr. Carpenter, Ph.D., holds a MBA from The University of Scranton as well as a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in accounting from the Pennsylvania State University. A Certified Management Accountant, he has received numerous teaching and research awards, including the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Outstanding Educator Award, the Society of Accounting Students’ Outstanding Educator award, the University of Scranton CASE Professor of the Year award, The University of Scranton’s Alpha Sigma Nu University Award for Teaching Excellence, the Kania School of Management’s Scholarship Award, the University’s Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award, and numerous best paper awards from various national and international accounting and business conferences.

He has authored numerous textbooks, handbooks and journal articles, and is involved in ongoing research projects involving financial accounting, auditing and pedagogical topics.

    Dr. Mahoney Ph.D., earned a bachelor’s degree and MBA from The University of Scranton as well as a doctorate in accounting from Syracuse University. A Certified Public Accountant, he was named Kania School of Management’s Professor of the Year four times. He was also named The University of Scranton CASE Professor of the Year, and received the University’s Alpha Sigma Nu University Award for Teaching Excellence and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants Outstanding Educator Award.

He worked as an internal auditor for the Prudential Insurance Company and his articles have been published in numerous professional journals, such as The CPA Journal, Internal Auditor and The Journal of Business and Economics Research, Accounting and Financial Management. He currently serves on the board of directors at the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.
